From the recording Gold and Coal
This was one of the last songs that came together on the album and is one of our favourites.
We had already formed the melody and the lyrics were intended to be original, but In the search for inspiration we turned to the writing of Robert Frost and immediately fell in love with his poem "A Peck of Gold". In a moment of pure serendipity, his words fit perfectly to our melody. There is something so magical about the way that Frost speaks of nostalgia, mingling it with the complexities of desire and opportunity in a chaotic world.

“A Peck of Gold”-1928
Lyrics
Dust was always blowing about the town
Except for when the sea fog laid it down
And I was one of the children told
Some of the blowing dust was gold
All the dust the wind blew high
Appeared like god in the sunset sky
But I was one of the children told
Some of the dust was really gold
Such was life in the Golden Gate
Gold dusted, all we drank and ate
And I was one of the children told
We all must eat our Peck of Gold
Dust was always blowing about the town
Except for when the sea fog laid it down
And I was one of the children told
Some of the blowing dust was gold
