The musical legacy of Dougie MacDonald (1968-2009) stands as a perfect encapsulation of our theme Gold and Coal.
Hailing from Cape Breton, Dougie was not only a wonderful fiddler and tradition bearer but also a source of deep inspiration for us as composers.
Cassie, who studied with him as a teenager, has long admired his technical playing, rhythmic drive and musicality, which defines the genre.
This track features clips from a casual conversation with Dougie himself Explaining his approach to tune making.

Lyrics

“If that’s the kind of attention
you could get from making tunes,
I said “I’m gonna start making tunes”

“And from that day,
that’s when I wanted
to start making tunes”

“I came off the stage,
and I was assaulted,
by everyone, swarming,
“Where’d you get that tune at?!”

“Everytime I play somewhere,
the fiddlers come up and say:
“Where’d you get that tune?
We want it!”
